Small coniferous plants: 3 best options for the garden

Not every plot size allows you to plant large trees, although many fans dream of coniferous plants in the country. However, the stereotype hinders: Christmas trees grow huge and take up a lot of space, and even cast a shadow on each other.

Therefore, often lovers of country life deprive themselves of the opportunity to grow magnificent trees and, as a result, beauty - everyone knows how stylish the compositions of coniferous plants make the site.

In fact, this is not the case. There are varieties of these plants, including Christmas trees, which are extremely compact and due to their size are suitable even for a very small plot of land.

In this article, we will tell you about the three most popular, but very small in size types of conifers that can be comfortably placed in your country.

Canadian spruce " Konika "

Spruce " Konika " is a small decorative tree that grows up to an average of two meters, like a normal decorative shrub. However, this is a real small Christmas tree with fluffy branches, which looks and grows quite "like a real one".

Despite the fact that it has a dense dense crown and bright green needles, the tree, if you hold your hand on it, the tree is quite soft. Its roots do not go deep, but grow shallowly from the surface, and this should be borne in mind when loosening.

The Christmas tree grows slowly, up to about 5 cm per year, which makes it very convenient for compositions. In five years, "Konika" will grow by 20 cm and gradually reach one and a half to two meters, and the maximum growth will be only under favorable conditions, if the soil or place is not too suitable for it, then it usually grows to 1-1.2 m.

Herringbone is convenient because it requires almost no maintenance: it does not need pruning, it does not react to the dryness of the soil for a long time and requires only periodic fertilizing in the summer.

Summer top dressing is reduced to the following:

in the root system, add 3-5kg of rotted organic matter, mix with the soil. In October, mulch with peat compost approx. 4-5 cm - for better wintering.
In spring, the needles turn yellow and turn rusty. Do not be alarmed - this is a normal reaction of the tree to the bright sun after winter. While the soil has not thawed and can not give the roots the necessary nutrition, the needles turn yellow, as soon as there is enough nutrition-the color will again become bright green. However, in March and April, if your Christmas tree is planted in a bright Sunny place, it is advisable to shade it - if it is small, cover it with a box, if it is larger-with a covering material that does not let light through.

Mountain pine " Gnome"

Another great option for a small garden is the mountain pine "Gnome". This is a dwarf coniferous tree, or rather, a shrub that reaches 2.5 meters in height and up to 2 meters in diameter and will therefore be appropriate on a site of any size.

The young tree grows in breadth for the first couple of years, after which it begins to grow up, which makes it convenient for creating interesting compositions.

The needles of this plant are dark green, not long, but rather prickly and hard. Two years after planting, cute little cones appear on the pine tree .

For planting this pine, it is best to choose Sunny places, it is light-loving and will grow better. In General, the pine "Gnome" plant is not too demanding, and feels equally good on all soils, and also tolerates frost and drought. It is rarely exposed to diseases or pests, which makes it just the perfect plant for a patio.

It is best to plant this pine in the spring, in mid-may or early autumn. If you decide to plant several of these pines, make sure that the distance between them is at least one and a half to two meters.

Tuya " Teddy"

A small spherical thuja with a beautiful name "Teddy" reaches a maximum of 50 cm and looks very interesting near stones and gravel. It can be planted in compositions with other coniferous plants and in flower beds with perennials, it will be appropriate everywhere. Gardeners love this plant not only for its compact size, but also for its decorative qualities: thin branches that delight with their green color all year round, a spherical crown and soft needles - the tree is very pleasant to stroke with your hands.

Due to its small leaves resembling needles, thuja was called "soft-needle".

Thuja "Teddy" loves the scattered sun, as bright sunlight literally burns out the color of the needles and it not only loses its decorative appearance, but may even die. If you have planted it in the sun, be sure to shade it in the spring, starting in April and at least until mid-may. Thuja does not like water accumulation, so plant it in places where the roots do not get wet - on high ground, where the ground water runs deep enough, in places that are not flooded by rain and meltwater, etc. Drainage is required for this plant.

For the winter, it is better to cover the plant with a dense box, so that its round soft crown does not deform under the snow. You can build a shelter on the roof, but I just cover it with a large bucket, which perfectly withstands the weight of snowdrifts. In addition, this plant is very easy to propagate, its cuttings take root almost always.

As you can see, you can easily choose coniferous plants that will perfectly fit into the landscape design of even a very small plot, if you would like.
