Oaks, firs and Apple trees: what trees and why are planted in the capital

More than half of the territory of old Moscow is occupied by green spaces, and every year the city is decorated with new oaks, lime trees, fir trees, lilac bushes, chubushnik, dogwood.

Under the "Million trees" program, plants are planted in all areas, not only in the center, and everyone can apply.Almost four million trees and shrubs have been planted in the capital over the past six years. The largest landscaping program in the capital — "Million trees" — was launched in 2013. Since then, the city has planted more than 79 thousand trees and 1.6 million shrubs. This year alone, more than half a million plants have appeared in Moscow.

In 2016, almost 3.5 thousand yards participated in the action, and for all seven seasons — almost 13 thousand, that is more than 50 percent of the total. Most of the yards — 2223 — were planted according to the results of voting in the project "Active citizen". They planted 4.6 thousand trees and more than 195 thousand shrubs.

In addition to courtyards, greener areas are near social facilities, such as schools and clinics. This year, near 137 of them planted 850 trees and 30,000 shrubs. A special direction of the action is the program "Hole in the hole", when the lost plants are replaced with new ones.

What plants are planted in Moscow's courtyardsChoose trees and shrubs that appear in the yard, you can in the booklet, which was the Department of environmental management and protection. It has more than 64 species, traditional for Central Russia and the Moscow region.

Plants are chosen not only in appearance: take into account their unpretentiousness and ability to adapt to urban conditions. For example, hanging birch, which in Moscow can be found in yards, parks, gardens and forests, easily tolerate frost and dry periods. Its relative — the birch fluffy — is less exacting to light and survives not only in severe winters, but also at stagnant moisture.

The list includes several types of oaks. Red grows quickly and is resistant to the urban environment, relatively undemanding to the soil, but loves moisture, and petiolate is not so sensitive to drought. Well is growing in urban conditions (gas and smoke) willow white, not very demanding to moisture and soil. Unpretentious and Tatar maple — a small tree with a rounded crown and almost black bark. It is drought-tolerant, shade-tolerant and the most winter-hardy of all maples.

From fruit trees in the capital are advised to plant cherries and Apple trees. The first is growing rapidly, tolerates shade, frost and drought, as well as smoke and polluted air. Apple berry is unpretentious and winter-hardy; it is often planted where there are above-ground communications or a small width of the sidewalk does not allow to plant a large tree. Nedzvetsky Apple tree with purple-green leaves and small fruits is resistant to pests and diseases.

From coniferous trees in the list were spruce, pine, larch, fir, arborvitae. Spruce, which lives 250-300 years, is low-consumption, although it is sensitive to late spring frosts, dryness and waterlogged soil. It does not tolerate smoke, unlike spruce. The latter thanks to the late vegetation does not suffer from spring frosts.

From the bushes, users of the "Active citizen" often chose lilac, chubushnik and dogwood. Dogwood brilliant and lilac — one of the most resistant species for residential areas. Lilac ordinary grows quickly, unpretentious to the soil and winter hardy, and Hungarian — gas - and drought-resistant. Chubushnik with large fragrant flowers tolerates frosts, loves the sun, but puts up with a light shading.
