A peaceful "profession" of engines for fighter jets.

The AL-31ST engines have worked 2 million hours. The first AL-31ST, developed on the basis of the AL-31F aircraft engine at the A. Lyulka Design Bureau (now the Design Bureau is a branch of PJSC UEC-UMPO), was installed on the gas pumping unit GPA-C-16 of the Karpinskaya compressor station in 1994.   

  The total operating time of AL-31ST gas turbine drives manufactured by PJSC UEC-UMPO (part of the United Engine Corporation) at the facilities of PJSC Gazprom on March 8, 2021 reached 2 million hours from the start of operation. Currently, PJSC Gazprom operates 76 such engines. The gas pumping unit GPA-Ts-16 is designed for transporting natural gas through main gas pipelines at an operating pressure of 5.2 - 7.5 MPa. In 1996, interdepartmental tests of the product were successfully carried out. In 2004, serial production of the engine began in UMPO. In 2014, the AL-31ST passed the milestone of one million operating hours.   The AL-31ST ground-based gas turbine engine has one of the most demanded capacities of 16 MW and is intended for use at gas pumping stations. The efficiency of the engine is 35.5%, which gives the product a competitive advantage over drives of the same power with lower efficiency. Reliability, environmental friendliness and efficiency of the AL-31ST allows it to be used in the key project of PJSC Gazprom "Power of Siberia". Since 2012, UEC-UMPO, in partnership with Gazprom Transgaz Ufa, has been successfully modernizing the AL-31ST drive. Thanks to this work, design changes have been introduced that have increased the reliability of the product: the working blade of a high-pressure turbine made of a heat-resistant alloy and an upgraded support of a high-pressure turbine. A project to create a low-emission combustion chamber to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere is being actively implemented. The creation of a power supply system for its own needs and the introduction of a low-pressure compressor module with an adjustable inlet guide device allows the engine to acquire new competitive advantages.   As part of the modernization, 13 patents were obtained, 21 scientific and technical publications were prepared on the topics of improving the reliability of the AL-31ST drive.   According to the results of 2020 The joint work of the UEC-UMPO and Gazprom Transgaz Ufa teams on the innovative system of remote trend control (monitoring) of the operating parameters of the AL-31ST engine was awarded the Gazprom Prize in the field of science and technology. Based on operational data obtained in real time from compressor stations and methods developed at the A. Lyulka Design Bureau, a branch of PJSC UEC-UMPO, the system allows analyzing the technical condition of engines, determining power parameters and monitoring the vibration state of engines.
