The UN recognized the Falkland Islands as part of Argentina

The UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf has decided to increase the maritime territory of Argentina by 1.7 million square kilometers, The Guardian reports.
In accordance with this decision, the Falkland Islands, which are in fact an overseas territory of Great Britain, were within the maritime borders of Argentina. The Government of Argentina, for its part, called the decision of the UN Commission historic. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of this country, Susana Malcorra, said that this event should be the key to resolving the territorial dispute with the UK. In addition, the demarcation of the external border of the continental shelf of Argentina confirms the sovereign rights of Buenos Aires to this shelf. In early January, on the next anniversary of the landing of British troops on the Falklands, the new Government of Argentina declared its struggle for the right to sovereignty over the Falkland Islands (Malvinas). In March 2013, a referendum on the status of the archipelago was held in the Malvinas Islands. The majority of residents were in favor of the territory remaining in the possession of the United Kingdom. Argentina, for its part, did not recognize the results of the referendum.
